The number of opportunities for entrepreneurs today is so vast that it's easy to get paralysed just trying to make up one's mind on what to do. Our recent podcast guest, Real Estate Entrepreneur, Joseph Rockey Jr got me thinking about what it's like to start something new. How do we decide on our next business move? After all not every business is for everyone.
I believe we have to start by understanding our own zone of genius, and this isn't to say we have to be masters of something before starting out. Simply because...
...Anything can be learnt.
The idea is that we should understand how we work best. Not necessarily what work we do best. Are you highly analytical, or a wordsmith, or are you able to envision things as they could be, or do you find delight in the finer details or get lost in the big picture thoughts? These traits can be applied to various things, but only when we are aware of what makes us tick.
Another consideration is the intensity behind our actions.
Some say follow your passion, but I recently heard something that made this not true in my mind. Billionaire entrepreneur, Naveen Jain (Shout out to Social Proof Podcast) said, passion is for hobbies and that if you're going to do something, it has to be an obsession. If it's not an obsession, the smallest bump in the road is enough to get you to quit.
Feed your brain more of the things that make it tick and unlock your genius.
Every genius is a little crazy, that's what obsession looks like to most people. As a society, we get uncomfortable around people who take a deep dive into something we don't understand. We can't relate to the frequency at which they are operating therefore they must be unusual.
The world desires to make us lukewarm in everything. Especially in our beliefs. We have to guard against being lukewarm spiritually and in our life's purpose and work. Once we are lukewarm, the natural next step is to be cold unless something brings a fire to that lukewarmness.
"For this reason, I remind you to fan into flames the gift of God,
which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."
Half of any business endeavour is having the right mindset for the nature of the venture and the other half is building the right relationships. Work on removing all fear and doubt from your mind. Understand that you are uniquely gifted to do what needs to be done. Be wise enough to be confident before people because of Christ, and to be deeply humble before God.
Have a blessed weekend!
