FIGHT FOR YOUR IDENTITY

Updated: Sep 1, 2022

As believers we tend to be casual about our identity in Christ. We can recite the verses that tell us who we are in our sleep, and yet we walk around acting defeated, or just going with the wind.

We are royalty based on our relationship with the King of Kings. We are not placed in positions that can be taken away by people like executives of companies, or limited to a time frame like politicians, or based on family trees like monarchies. We are the chosen people of the eternal Kingdom of God, walking this earth while we await to be called home.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” ~ 1 Peter 2: 9

We are insiders to all that is good and perfect. It’s an unfair advantage given to us through the blood of Jesus Christ that has made us friends with the God of the heavens and earth. We have access to Him who is able to do all things therefore all our problems have a solution. The secrets of life and eternity have been given to us through the Word and the Holy Spirit.

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” ~ John 15: 15

We never face anything alone, whether good or bad, so there is no need for us to fear.  All we have to do is surrender and be still. Wherever we go, God is present, granting us favour in rooms where we have never been, among people we many not even know.

“The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." ~ Exodus 14: 14

If we know all these things and  understand them to be the truth; why do we live beneath our God given potential? Beloveds, the enemy is after our belief. In our belief lies our power in Christ. Knowing who we are is not enough.  Is this why Mark 9: 23 begins with the statement: “If YOU can believe”? Knowing and believing are two very different things.

“Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

Knowledge is dangerous because it can masquerade as belief until one is put to the test. When tested, people will always default to what they believe. That’s how powerful belief is. 1 Corinthians 8: 1 tells us that “knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.” This is where sayings like “an educated fool” stem from. Knowledge feeds pride but belief directs our lives.

Do you believe that you are special in the eyes of the Almighty God? Do you believe that His favour is upon you no matter the circumstances?

The apostles were ordinary people just like you and I, but they believed. They believed enough to walk away from all that they knew to follow Jesus. That is why Paul could say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4: 13) Even though he was in prison, Paul was more free than a person not in jail because of what he believed. Circumstances were trivial. Even prison could not break him. Paul gives us the answer, bring everything that causes anxiety and stress in your life to the Lord. He will give us peace. We should never live in a state of anxiety. Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace and the Wonderful Counselor (Isaiah 9: 6)

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” ~ Philippians 4: 6 - 7

Wrestle in the spirit until God gives you an answer. How do we wrestle? Pray and fast until the matter is finished. The battle of our life is not physical but spiritual. If you’re lacking peace, wrestle until you have peace. It’s the will of God for us to enjoy peace on this earth. Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9: 6). When we’re confused and in need of counsel, we must wrestle in the spirit. Our Lord is The Wonderful Counselor. We have to be conscious about how we handle life’s matters; we should never run to places where there is no solution. Charles Stanley says, “Fight all your battles on your knees, and you win everytime.” Anything that causes anxiety in us should be brought before our Loving Father.

“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” ~ James 5: 16

We hold the key to unlocking the promises of God through prayer. Let’s not stand outside the door, or sit in the hallways like lost sheep. Our God and Savior Jesus Christ is the Great Shepherd, we lack nothing (Psalm 23).

Which part of your identity as a believer and child of God will you begin to claim today?
